Prayer Guide - July 2008
Tuesday, 1
This month we will refer to The Prayer Creed, which contains scriptural principles about prayer. The Creed was carried in a recent newsletter of Paul Utley, a long time missionary to Thailand. Paul is a United Methodist and long time friend of Good News president Jim Heidinger. Praise God for teachings on prayer.
Hal Kime, Ecuador – OMS
Andrew Howell – TMS
Sara Flores-Quinonez, Bolivia – GBGM
Wednesday, 2
We believe that Jesus Christ has made prayer possible. “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Father, thank you for sending your beloved Son, that we may have full access to you.
Billy Wayne Fuller, Kenya – WGM
George Martzen, Singapore – GBGM
Thursday, 3
We wish the most glorious of shared birthdays to our Good News president, the Rev. Jim Heidinger, his wife Joanie, and also to Sara Lynn, who is an office assistant at Good News! Sara attends Asbury Seminary as well. “But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful” (Psalm 68:3). Father, we ask you to bless them with more birthdays, love and good health than they ever imagined they could have.
Brent Burdick, Philippines – OMS
Friday, 4
Happy Independence Day and have fun celebrating while you keep in mind those who have fought, and are still fighting, for our freedom! “You my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather, serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13). O Father, through faith in you we are set free in all things. Hallelujah!
Saturday, 5
“So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me’” (John 11:41). Remember to thank and praise God for blessings and answered prayers. Jehovah, one of those answers is the continued healing of Phil Granger, President of The Mission Society, following serious surgery.
Samuel Kohler, Japan – OMS
Ed Baker – TMS
Yuko Boyle, Japan – GBGM
Sunday, 6
We believe that God hears and answers prayer. “O you who hear prayer, to you all men will come” (Psalms 65:2). Lord, help us to remember that we are not praying to a distant deity who cannot hear, but that your ears are open to the cry of the righteous.
Mark Zimmerman, Nepal – GBGM
Monday, 7
Pray for many pastors and their families as they settle into new churches and new homes.
Adam Hoyt; Arthur Ivey; Mark Waltz – TMS
Tuesday, 8
We believe that Jesus Christ placed priority on prayer. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35). O Father, help us to learn from the example of our Lord Jesus Christ and be intentional about daily communing with you!
Adam Dalenburg – TMS
Wednesday, 9
We believe that Jesus Christ has taught us how to pray. “He [Jesus] said to them, ‘When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation’” (Luke 11:2-4). Lord, let us see that you were giving us more than a mere formula here, but at the very least, we can learn that prayer should be daily.
Thursday, 10
We believe that Jesus Christ is praying for us. “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message” (John 17:20). Thank you, Father, that you raised Jesus Christ from the dead and seated him at your right hand. He ever lives to make intercession for the saints.
Charlie Wilkos; Sharon Prickett – TMS
Friday, 11
We believe that the Holy Spirit is interceding for us. “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express” (Romans 8:26). Father, we often do not know how to pray for certain people or situations, and it is at those times that the Spirit fills that prayer and need. Thank you!
Saturday, 12
Pray that church congregations receiving new pastors will give them much support and love.
Carol Johnson – TMS
Suzanne Porter, Liberia – GBGM
Sunday, 13
Our best birthday wishes go out to the Rev. Bill Hines, one of our Good News Lifetime Board Members. Bill resides in Marysville, Ohio, with his wife Carolyn. God, please abundantly bless your faithful servants, Bill and Carolyn, during these days.
Monday, 14
We believe in personal prayer. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). Oh Lord, fill us all with a hunger for being your hands, feet, and mouth on this earth.
Sun Lae Kim, Mongolia – GBGM
Tuesday, 15
A special birthday wish goes out to Jennifer Gillispie! Jennifer is a Good News office assistant who helps in our mailing department. She and her husband Craig have two sons. Father, we ask you to bless Jennifer and Craig with exceptional parental abilities.
Wesley Magruder, Cameroon – GBGM
Wednesday, 16
We believe in partnership prayer. “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20). Jesus, you have given us power through your spirit, so that when we are together in unity, we are united with you.
Thursday, 17
A wonderful “Happy Birthday” to Jim Lodovic, III! Jim is a Good News Board Member and Treasurer. He and his wife, Sharon, live in New Braunfels, Texas. Thank you Father for their faithful service to you and we pray you continue to bless them abundantly.
Beatrice Kipuke – TMS
Joy Phillips, Kenya – WGM
Deidre Zimmerman, Nepal – GBGM
Friday, 18
We believe in persistence in prayer. “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1). God, help us to pray for persons, situations, and the church even if those circumstances seem hopeless to us at the time. We know you will never forsake us.
Cameron Gongwer – TMS
Saturday, 19
We believe in the practicality of prayer. “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom” (Isaiah 40:28). Father, you know all things. Help us to trust you always, in all circumstances, and not lean on our own understandings. Your plan is perfect.
William Meyers, Korea – GBGM
Sunday, 20
We believe in the power of prayer. “So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. ‘Quick, get up!’ he said and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists” (Acts 12:5,7).
Ben Reyes – TMS
Monday, 21
We believe in relinquishment in prayer. “Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will’” (Matthew 26:39). Our reservations about relinquishment in prayer often reflect our uncertainty about the Father’s trustworthiness toward us. His will for us is good.
Scott Hagemann, Haiti – OMS
Tuesday, 22
We believe in the comprehensive coverage of prayer. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6). Lord, help me to learn to bring anything, yes, everything to you in my praying. You know the secrets of our hearts.
Mari Hicks – TMS
Wednesday, 23
We believe in family prayer. “When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying” (Acts 12:12). Lord, your Word reminds us that we must always and everywhere be praying in our families and our church families. Help us to do it faithfully.
Thursday, 24
We believe in meeting the conditions of prayer. “And receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him” (I John 3:22). This is the strategic “other side” of effective prayer--obeying and pleasing our Heavenly Father. It is the prayers of a righteous man which “availeth much.”
Friday, 25
We wish a spectacular Happy Birthday to the Rev. Budd Sprague, a Good News Board Lifetime Member! Budd and his wife, Carole, make their home in Canton, Ohio. God, we lift up these servants of yours asking that you bless them with good health and much love.
Vay Facione, Ecuador – OMS
Chris Champion – TMS
Samuel Grano de Oro, Dominican Republic – GBGM
Saturday, 26
We believe in the promises of prayer. “He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him” (Psalms 91:15). This and the previous verse speak of God’s promises to “rescue,” to “protect,” to “answer” and to “deliver and honor with long life,” to “satisfy” and to “show” us his salvation. God says “Because he loves me,” he will do all of this. Kay Ziegler, Brazil – OMS
Sunday, 27
We believe in God’s Word as the guide to prayer. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (II Timothy 3:16). Continue to breathe guidance into us through your Word and your Holy Spirit.
John Carrick; Margaret Buell – TMS
Monday, 28
We believe the church is a house of prayer. “‘It is written,’ he said to them, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer’’’ (Matthew 21:13).
Thank You, Lord, for a community gathered together in your name to seek you in prayer.
Paul Cummings, Spain – OMS
Mike Mosley; Deb Slingluff – TMS
Terry Duncan, Africa – WGM
Shana Harrison, Chile – GBGM
Tuesday, 29
We believe in praying for others. “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective” (James 5:16). God, it is a command and a blessing to lift others up to you for healing and wholeness. Help us to be faithful in this activity.
Wednesday, 30
We believe in praise predominating prayer. “Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live” (Psalms 146:1-2). While life remains in me, help me, gracious God, to continue praising your name. Praise ye the Lord! Hallelujah!
Thursday, 31
We believe in prayer as a primary means in fulfillment of the Great Commission. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Lord, thank you for the power of Pentecost in our lives—the power to be witnesses of your grace because of our love for you and others.
Beverly Barte, Cambodia – GBGM
